The ACC started off the season on an embarrassing note, as two schools fell to non FBS teams. Also the conference did not fair well in other non conference games. There was one thrilling rivalry game, which always comes down to the last play.
First we will start off with one of the bright spots for the conference, and that week one featured a rivalry game between the Florida State Seminole and the Miami Hurricanes. The game was back and forth the whole way and came down to a dropped pass by the Seminoles Fortson as Miami won in Tallahassee by a score of 38-34. Georgia Tech, Boston College, North Carolina, and Clemson took care of business as they defeated their out of conference foes in convincing fashion. The Yellow Jackets downed Jacksonville State in Atlanta by a score of 37-17 as Jonathan Dwyer rushed for two touchdowns and had 335 yards. Boston College routed Northeastern in a 54-0 shut out win. The Tar Heels defeated the Citadel by a score of 40-6. Clemson also had a nice win over Middle Tennessee State with a score of 37-14. In other non conference action, the other teams in action were not as fortunate. NC-State led off the football season dropping a thriller at home to Steve Spurrier's South Carolina Gamecocks. Wake Forest had an embarrassing loss to Baylor at home by a score of 24-21. Maryland was routed by Cal by a score of 52-13. The Alabama Crimson Tide downed the Virginia Tech Hokies in a thrilling ACC vs SEC match up by a score of 34-24. Virginia and Duke suffered embarrassing losses to non-FBS teams. Richmond defeated the Blue Devils, 24-16 and William and Mary downed the Cavs by a score of 26-14.
